St Paul City Council Candidates Seek to Repeal the Summit Avenue Bike Trail Plan

“Bike Lanes Trump War Coverage”

A Press Conference was called by Ward 4 City Council Candidate Robert Bushard on Summit Avenue. Before he launched into the reason of the Press Conference, Robert Bushard said he went to a public meeting 24 years ago and asked the Congressman who was there about the War in Kosovo and the Member of Congress couldn’t respond but he wanted to talk about Bike Lanes. Today there’s a war brewing in the Middle East but the press coverage is about Bike Lanes.

He outlined how Summit Avenue will look in the future. Close to 950 trees will be clear cut to make way for a bike trail that no one wants.

Where is the money coming from when they can’t fill potholes in the Most Livable City without a 1% sales tax increase?

Most of the nonpartisan candidates who weren’t endorsed by St Paul DFL nor DFL leaders, nor endorsed by labor unions, nor are multiple term incumbents held a press conference to show their support against this plan to ruin Summit Avenue by sawing down 950 trees and putting in a bike trail that can only be used when it isn’t cold or snowy.

This event was put together by St Paul City Council Candidate for Ward 4 Robert Bushard. He outlined how the St Paul City Council decided without much public input to go forward with the project to destroy St Paul’s Historic Summit Avenue. About 950 Trees will have to be clear cut and the street ripped up.

Other St Paul City Council Candidates from other Wards spoke at the Press Conference in opposition to the Summit Avenue Region Trail Plan. The following were present: Ward 1 Travis Helkamp, Ward 2 Peter Butler, Ward 3 Patty Hartmann, Troy Barksdale, Ward 4 Robert Bushard, Ward 5 Pam Tollefson, Ward 6 Gary Unger. There were others who were not present who sent letters in which Robert Bushard read before the audience: Ward 1 James Lo, Ward 2 Bill Hosko, Ward 5 David Greenwood-Sanchez, and Ward 7 Dino Guerin.

The Unelected Metropolitan Council Decides to go Forward with the Plan

In the news since this Press Conference on October 24, 2023, the unelected body of Governor Cronies from the Metropolitan Council has decided to go forward with the Summit Avenue Regional Trail. There wasn’t an environmental impact study done, it’s just a make work project that doesn’t really need to be done. The money for this project could fill potholes or repave the priority streets with concrete instead of asphalt.  The opposition to this Bike Trail Plan is overwhelming and yet the Out-of-Touch City Council is adamant it must be done.

Councilwoman Mitra Jalali Says it’s Embarrassing to Oppose the Plan

This is a hot button issue that might bring out voters to vote in this nonpartisan election.  All Politics are about local issues and we thank those Candidates who came out to support the People who live in St Paul who are in opposition to this plan which had very little transparency despite what Ward 4 Incumbent and DFL Endorsed Candidate Mitra Jalali said to the Pioneer Press recently. She said it was an embarrassing position for these candidates to take.

No it’s more embarrassing to go against the will of the people who think the Historic Summit Avenue should remain mostly of how it currently is.
